Mpesa Fraud: The ”Customer-care impersonation” tactic

An Mpesa agent will receive a call on their Mpesa line purportedly coming from Mpesa customer care staff. They will say they are upgrading their systems and would like an Agent to confirm some particulars on their records.

The unwary Agent will disclose all including their agent ID, PIN number and even their float balance and Alas! the fraudster has enough fodder for cleaning the Agent out of the float balance.

Still believing that the call is from Mpesa, the Agent will be duped to key in some coded numbers to enable their urgency to be upgraded and woe unto them; the float balance is gone!

PRECAUTION

  • An agent should never divulge any vital information regarding Mpesa to anyone unless the source has been verified to be genuine
